History of Day of Father's Day

day of father's day

The history of Father’s Day celebrations is not long ago. Unfortunately, the first event was about a tragic mining explosion rather than the idea of greeting cards and flowers in the present-day celebration.

The first Father’s Day ceremony was recorded in 1908. It was a memorial service to honor and remember the men who died in the deadliest mining tragedy in American history in 1896. Although it is not considered the first Father’s Day celebration, the story is remembered as the first initiative to honor the role of a father in our society.

The Sunday service occurred in a city in West Virginia named Fairmont. Grace Golden Clayton worked diligently to arrange the ceremony for hundreds of deceased, and one of them was her father.

After that, in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd was the one who popularized the idea of celebrating Father’s day. The idea came to her mind as she was focused on listening to the sermon for Mother’s Day.

Mrs. Dodd had observed her father's struggle as he raised her six siblings alone after her mother died. So, she decided on June 5 since it was her father, William Smart’s birthday.

She suggested the idea to YMCA and Spokane Ministerial Association. The association was supportive enough to prepare a sermon for the day and asked her to postpone the date so they could prepare.

And the first local celebration was observed in Washington on the 3rd Sunday of June in 1910.

Furthermore, after many failed attempts, Richard Nixon, President of the United States, passed the law to celebrate Father’s day as a National Holiday in 1972.
